Dell Precision 3620 Workstation Tower - System Overview

The Dell Precision 3620 Workstation tower does not support the crazy amount of options available on the top of the line Precision 7920 workstation tower but it does deliver an impressive set of features ideal for 2D, 3D, AutoCAD, and video. You can also install either a single top tier graphics card or two middle of the road cards from Nvidia or AMD for increased performance. For those of us with more modest needs, the Dell Precision 3620 workstation delivers a very capable platform with a number of optional upgrades that will increase performance where it counts.

Performance

This system can support two different families of Processors, the 7th and 6th generations of the Core i3, i5, and i7 processors plus the Intel Xeon E3-1200 v5 family of processors. Depending on your choice Turbo Boost and or Intel Integrated HD Graphics may or may not be included. Processors without integrated graphics, like some of the Intel Xeon E3-1200 v5 family will require a discrete graphics card for graphics output—in other words, you'll need a graphics card. Power is provided by a 290W PSU but there is an optional 365W 80PLUS Gold certified PSU available.

Memory

Up to 64GB of DDR4 memory in four DIMM slots are supported on the Dell 3620 offering speeds of up to 2400Mhz. However, the 6th generation Intel processors only support speeds of up to 2133Mhz even with memory modules that support faster transfer speeds. Both ECC and non-ECC memory modules are supported.

Storage

Two internal storage bays support either four 2.5-inch or two 3.5-inch SATA HDD or SSD storage devices. A slot on the motherboard supports a single M.2 NVMe drive of up to 1TB. Another M.2 can be installed using a Dell Precision Ultra-Speed drive in one of the PCie slots. Additional external storage can be connected using one of the integrated USB 2.0 or a USB 3.0 connection. For faster data transfers, an optional Thunderbolt 2.0 PCIe card is available. The motherboard also features an integrated HD/RAID controller with the drives plugged directly into the motherboard.

Expansion

There are three PCIe 3.0 slots and a single PCI slot for a legacy card. There's also a x4 PCIe slot on the motherboard for an NVMe M.2 storage device. The system features Intel HD Graphics with certain processors and you can plug a monitor directly into one of the ports on the back of the system. Other processors do not have integrated graphics and require a discrete graphics card for video output. You can install a single high-performance graphics card like the Nvidia M4000 or other cards that can be used in a dual configuration for combined total of up to 150W for graphics. A single speaker provides audio on the system but can be upgraded with an optional PCIe sound card and Dell's 2.0 Stereo speaker system.

Management

Dell Client Suite provides easy management of the system, with vPro for out of band management when the chips are down. The Dell Precision optimizer can also help you get the most out of your system with a free download designed to optimize each of the ISV certified applications to achieve the best performance based on the configuration of your system.

Summary

This is a great platform for beginning and intermediate designers and offers a just the right combination of features and options to support your needs. For light 2D and 3D graphics, AutoCAD, and light video editing this system is the right choice but offers limited scalability. That said, for most users this platform is probably more than enough to get the job done quickly and efficiently.

The Quadro P2200 was a professional graphics card by NVIDIA, launched on June 10th, 2019. Built on the 16 nm process, and based on the GP106 graphics processor, the card supports DirectX 12. The GP106 graphics processor is an average sized chip with a die area of 200 mm² and 4.40 billion transistors. It features 1280 shading units, 80 texture mapping units, and 40 ROPs. NVIDIA has paired 5 GB GDDR5X memory with the Quadro P2200, which is connected using a 160-bit memory interface. The GPU is operating at a frequency of 1000 MHz, which can be boosted up to 1493 MHz, memory is running at 1251 MHz (10 Gbps effective).
Being a single-slot card, the NVIDIA Quadro P2200 does not require any additional power connector, its power draw is rated at 75 W maximum. Display outputs include: 4x DisplayPort 1.4a. Quadro P2200 is connected to the rest of the system using a PCI-Express 3.0 x16 interface. The card a single-slot cooling solution.
